A seated coin refers to the Seated Liberty coinage series produced by the United States Mint from 1836 to 1891. These coins are characterized by their obverse design, featuring the figure of Liberty seated on a rock.

Here’s a breakdown of the key characteristics of Seated Liberty coins:

  • Design: The obverse (front) of these coins depicts Lady Liberty seated on a rock, wearing a flowing dress. She holds a Liberty pole with a Phrygian cap (a symbol of freedom) in her left hand and a shield with the inscription “LIBERTY” in her right. The date is inscribed at the bottom.
  • Denominations: The Seated Liberty design appeared on several denominations of silver US coins including:

– Half Dime (1837-1873)
– Dime (1837-1891)
– Quarter (1838-1891)
– Half Dollar (1839-1891)
– Silver Dollar (1836-1873)
– Twenty-Cent Piece (1875-1878)

  • Composition: All Seated Liberty coins were made of 90% silver and 10% copper.
  • Variations: The design underwent several modifications over the years, including the addition and removal of stars and drapery, [the placement of arrows by the date to indicate weight changes] , and the addition of the motto “In God We Trust” to some denominations.
  • Minting: These coins were produced at the Philadelphia Mint (no mintmark) and its branch mints in New Orleans (“O”), San Francisco (“S”), and Carson City (“CC”).

The Seated Liberty design is significant because it was a long-running and widely circulated series that played a role in American commerce during a period of expansion and change, including the Civil War era.

When it comes to well-preserved Seated Liberty Dollars you can expect to pay anywhere from a few hundred dollars to as much as $2,000. The drastic price variance has to do with the rarity of the coin in question.

Seated Dollars were not issued in large quantities and never circulated extensively in commerce. Many Liberty Seated Dollar issues were more likely to be exported to other countries for their metal con- tent or sold to collectors than used as circulating medium in the United States.
