The value of a Libertad coin, like most precious metal coins, is primarily determined by its metal content (silver or gold) and its weight, but can also be influenced by collector demand due to factors like mintage figures, [says APMEX].

Here’s a breakdown of current values for some common Mexican Libertad coins:

  • 1 oz Silver Libertad (Random Year): These coins typically range from approximately $31.95 to $79.00 USD. According to APMEX, the 2024 edition of the 1 oz Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Libertad is available for $49.95 USD.
  • [1/4 oz Silver Libertad]: The 2024 Mexico 1/4 oz Silver Libertad BU Coin is currently priced between $22.11 and $22.51 USD.
  • [2 oz Silver Libertad]: For example, the 2022 Mexico 2 oz Reverse Proof Libertad Independencia 40th Anniversary, with a limited mintage of 500, is listed for $325 USD.
  • [5 oz Silver Libertad]: You can find random year 5 oz Silver Libertad BU coins ranging from around $285.11 to $391.93 USD.

  • Mintage: Libertads have limited mintages, making them more collectible and potentially increasing their premium over the melt value of their metal content.
  • Year: Some years may be rarer or more sought-after than others, leading to higher values. For instance, the 2019 1 oz Silver Libertad has a significantly higher price listed ($113.25) compared to the 2021 edition ($54.26) on the APMEX value chart.
  • Condition: Coins in better condition (like Brilliant Uncirculated – BU or Proof) will command higher prices.
  • Grade: Graded coins (e.g., NGC MS70) are typically more valuable than ungraded coins.
  • Type: Proof and Reverse Proof versions often have higher values due to their limited mintages.
  • Spot price of silver/gold: Since Libertads are primarily bought for their metal content, the fluctuations in the market price of silver or gold directly influence their value.

You can sell Libertad coins at:

  • Online bullion dealers: Companies like KITCO offer online selling options and potentially courier pickup.
  • Local coin dealers: Shops specializing in coins, bullion, and collectibles are a good option. Examples in Colorado include [A World of Coins] and [Golden Peaks Coin, Gold & Silver].

Why are Mexican Libertad coins so expensive?

I can help with that. Very limited mintages and only a small portion is made available for purchase outside of Mexico. As they are beautiful coins with not enough to go around the price increases. It wasn’t always this way, a few years ago they were more inline with other bullion prices.

    Are Libertads a good investment?

Liquidity is very good with both 1/10 & 1/4. At the end of the day people buy them and will in the future. Plus lots more people have the money for a 1/10 as compared to 1oz which limits the buyers a lot more. Libertads are also popular so no problem there.

Thanks for asking. The modern coins contain 99.9% silver or gold (. 999 fineness) and are available in various sizes.
