The value of a 1981 half dollar coin depends on several factors, including its condition, mint mark, and whether it’s a regular strike or a proof coin.

  • Regular Strike Coins (P and D Mint Marks):

– Most 1981 Kennedy half dollars from the Philadelphia (P) and Denver (D) mints, in circulated condition, are generally worth a bit more than face value, typically around $0.60 to $0.75.
– However, uncirculated examples in pristine condition can be worth significantly more. For example, a 1981-P in uncirculated condition can sell for as much as $3,750. A 1981-D in uncirculated condition can sell for up to $2,400.

  • Proof Coins (S Mint Mark):

– 1981 proof Kennedy half dollars from the San Francisco (S) mint were produced in limited quantities and are generally more collectible.
– Proof coins, especially those in high grades like Choice Proof, are more valuable than regular strike coins in similar conditions.
– There are two varieties of 1981-S proof coins: Type 1 (filled ‘S’) and Type 2 (clear ‘S’). The Type 1 with a filled ‘S’ is particularly sought after by collectors.
– While proofs don’t contain precious metals like earlier Kennedy halves, their limited mintage and special finish make them valuable collectibles.

The following factors can significantly impact the value of a 1981 half dollar:

  • Condition/Grade: Coins in higher grades (less wear, better strike) are worth more. Grading is typically done on a scale of 1-70, with 70 being perfect.
  • Mint Mark: The mint mark indicates where the coin was produced. 1981 Kennedy half dollars were produced in Philadelphia (P), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S, for proof coins).
  • Errors: Coins with mint errors, like off-center strikes or doubled dies, can be considerably more valuable than standard coins. One example of a 1981 Kennedy error half dollar is described as having “pressing errors” and listed for $447 on eBay.

Important note: Cleaning coins can damage them and significantly reduce their value. If you believe you have a valuable 1981 half dollar, especially one with a possible error or in pristine condition, it’s recommended to consult with a reputable coin dealer or professional grading service for evaluation.

Good point! Once again in 1981, the hub was redone, and the mint mark was less pronounced and flatter. Additionally, the ends of the hook on the “S” on this coin have a bulbous end that is very pronounced.

From my experience, According to the NGC Price Guide, as of August 2025, a Susan B Anthony Coin from 1981 in circulated condition is worth between $1.05 and $1.35. However, on the open market 1981 S Silver Dollars in pristine, uncirculated condition sell for as much as $3750.

After 1970, the coins are minted in a copper–nickel clad composition. From 1992 to 2018, 90% silver coins were made for inclusion in special “Limited Edition” silver proof sets.

Although the standard coin itself can hold value, you can identify rarer versions of this coin by looking at the design. Coins with known and documented errors, like changes in the former president’s hair, can be worth even more.
