The value of a 1776-1976 Kennedy Half Dollar (also known as a Bicentennial Half Dollar) depends on several factors, primarily its condition, mint mark, and whether it’s the silver version or the more common copper-nickel clad version.

Here’s a breakdown of values based on different types of 1776-1976 Bicentennial Half Dollars:

  • Circulated (used): These coins are generally worth between $1.50 and $3.
  • Uncirculated (no signs of wear): These coins can be worth anywhere from $5 to $20, with higher prices for coins in excellent condition.
  • No Mint Mark (Philadelphia Mint): These are the most common and are typically found in circulated condition.
  • “D” Mint Mark (Denver Mint): These are slightly less common than Philadelphia coins.
  • Circulated: These coins are worth between $5.75 and $6.25.
  • Uncirculated: These coins can be worth $20 to $50 or more, especially for high-grade proofs. Pristine, uncirculated examples have sold for as much as $12,500.
  • Proof versions: Some proof coins from the San Francisco mint contain 40% silver, which makes them more valuable than clad proofs.
  • Certain rare mint errors, such as a Double Die Error, can significantly increase the coin’s value. One such error coin with doubling on “INDEPENDENCE HALL” sold for $5,200.
  • Other errors like off-center strikes or missing clad layers can also increase the value, with some selling for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. For example, a missing clad layer error coin sold for $1,900.

In summary, while most 1776-1976 Bicentennial half dollars have a modest value, coins with the “S” mint mark (especially proofs or those in uncirculated condition) and coins with significant errors can be quite valuable to collectors.

But the 1776-1976 bicentennial quarter is different. This coin is about the spirit of the whole nation. It was a coin for the 200th anniversary of the United States’ independence. This piece represents possibilities for collectors, as there are bicentennial quarter errors and mint marks that can be rather expensive.
