The value of a 1976 Eisenhower dollar coin can vary greatly depending on several factors, including its condition, mintmark, and whether it’s a silver or clad coin.

  • Bicentennial Design: 1976 Eisenhower dollars feature a special Bicentennial design with the Liberty Bell superimposed against the moon on the reverse side.
  • Mintmark:

– “D” mintmark (Denver): Circulated coins are generally worth face value or slightly more (around $1.05 – $1.50). Uncirculated coins, especially in higher grades (like MS69), can be significantly more valuable (up to $7500 for Type 2).
– “S” mintmark (San Francisco): These were typically silver clad coins (40% silver) and are worth more due to their silver content. Circulated “S” mint coins are currently worth around $12.50 – $13.75, while uncirculated ones can fetch up to $7000.
– No mintmark (Philadelphia): These coins exist in two types: Type 1 (bold lettering) and Type 2 (thin lettering).
– Type 1: Circulated coins are worth slightly above face value. Uncirculated Type 1 coins are valued around $4.60.
– Type 2: Similar to Type 1, circulated coins are worth slightly above face value. Uncirculated Type 2 coins are valued around $4.50.

  • Silver Content: Some 1976 Eisenhower dollars, particularly those with the “S” mintmark, contain 40% silver. This adds to their intrinsic value based on the current market price of silver. The melt value of a 40% silver Eisenhower dollar is approximately $12.04 as of August 15, 2025.
  • Condition: Uncirculated and proof coins are generally more valuable than circulated ones. Well-preserved coins with good eye appeal will command higher prices.
  • Errors: Some 1976 Eisenhower dollars have known errors, like a weak strike on the Liberty Bell or rounded corners, which can significantly increase their value to collectors.

In summary: While many circulated 1976 Eisenhower dollars are only worth slightly above face value, silver clad versions (especially those with the “S” mintmark) and coins in exceptional, uncirculated condition, or with specific errors, can be quite valuable to collectors. If you have a 1976 Eisenhower dollar, it’s recommended to consult a reputable coin dealer or use an online price guide for a more precise valuation based on its specific characteristics.

How do I know if my 1976 Eisenhower Dollar is silver?

Even though they were special order coins, some 40% Eisenhower silver dollars still made their way into circulation. Besides checking for an ā€œSā€ mintmark on the obverse or front of the coin, collectors can check the edge of the coin for a copper stripe.
