The obverse of a coin refers to its front side , also commonly known as the “heads ” side. It typically features the most prominent or main design element, such as a portrait of a person (like a president or monarch), a national emblem, or a symbol representing the issuing country.

Here are some key characteristics associated with the obverse side of a coin:

  • Main Design: It often showcases the primary design element, like the head of a ruler or a significant symbol.
  • Portrait: In countries with a monarch, the ruler’s head or bust usually appears on the obverse.
  • Date of Issue: On United States coins, the obverse is generally the side with the date of mintage.
  • Identifying Inscriptions: The obverse may also include inscriptions like the country’s name, the year of minting, or a mint mark indicating the facility where it was produced.
  • “Heads” Side: The obverse is often referred to as the “heads” side, as it frequently features the head of a prominent figure.

In contrast, the reverse is the back side of the coin, often called the “tails ” side, and typically displays the coin’s denomination, national symbols, or other artwork.

Obverse (heads) is the front of the coin and the reverse (tails) is the back. Edge is the outer surface, which can have lettering, reeding, or be plain. Near the edge is the raised area called the rim. A bust is an image of a person from the neck up, like Abraham Lincoln on the penny.

Good point! The obverse is the main, or primary, side of something that has two sides. The obverse of a quarter is the side with the handsome profile of George Washington on it.

Coin alignment commonly refers to reverse die axis. Simply put, this means that the obverse (head) of a coin faces upright or normally, but the reverse (tails/back) is upside down when the coin is spun 180 degrees.
