Numerous free coin grading and identification apps are available for both Android and iOS devices. Here are some of the most popular options:

  • Coinoscope: This app uses AI to identify coins from a photo taken with your phone’s camera. It provides information on the coin’s origin, history, and estimated value. Coinoscope also includes a marketplace feature to buy or sell coins and allows you to manage your collection. Coinoscope is free to download and use for basic identification, though a “pro” version with additional features might be available through in-app purchases.
  • CoinSnap: Similar to Coinoscope, CoinSnap also uses AI-driven image recognition to identify coins from a photo. It provides details like the coin’s date, mint, origin, rarity, and estimated value. CoinSnap also allows users to record and store their coin collections and track their value. CoinSnap is free to download, but a paid subscription might be necessary for premium features.
  • PCGS CoinFacts: This app, developed by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), is specifically designed for US coin collectors. It offers a comprehensive database with information on over 40,000 US coins, including values, populations, images, historical narratives, and auction results. PCGS CoinFacts also allows barcode scanning for PCGS or NGC graded coins. It is 100% free to use but requires an internet connection.
  • Coin ID Scanner: This app uses AI to provide instant identification and valuation of coins from a photo. It offers a user-friendly interface, historical context, and supports a vast database of over 150,000 coins from various regions and eras. Coin ID Scanner has a free version with basic features, and users can upgrade for additional functionalities.
  • NGC App: This app provides access to resources from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), the Official Grading Service of the American Numismatic Association (ANA). It includes features like NGC certification verification, the NGC Census, NGC Registry, and submission tracking, [according to the American Numismatic Association] . The app is free to download.
  • Accuracy: While these apps leverage AI and extensive databases, the accuracy of their grading and valuation estimates can vary. Professional grading companies like PCGS and NGC provide more precise and reliable assessments.
  • Subscription Models: Many of these apps offer a free version with limited features and a premium version available through a subscription or in-app purchases.
  • Features: Different apps cater to different needs. Some focus on identification and value estimation, while others offer collection management tools or access to specific grading service databases.

Before choosing an app, consider your specific needs as a coin collector and explore the features and reviews of different options.

From my experience, Head to PCGS Photograde online, or the PCGS Coinfacts app. Either resource has high-res pics of graded specimens across the range of grades for each type of coin. It’s a great way to visually learn how to grade different US coins.
