The Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollar, specifically the 2000-P variety, is a rare and sought-after error coin, significantly more valuable than its face value of $1.

Here’s why and what you should know about its value:

  • The “Wounded Eagle” error refers to raised die flaws resembling a spear or arrow piercing the eagle’s breast on the coin’s reverse.
  • Look for these lines entering near the center of the eagle’s chest and exiting near the right wing.
  • These are raised lines, not scratches or indentations.
  • Rarity: Only a relatively small number of Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollars are known to exist (estimates vary, but some sources suggest under 200 specimens have been reported).
  • Condition: As with any coin, the better the condition (grade) of a Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollar, the higher its value. A coin with its original mint luster and without scratches or wear will be more desirable.
  • Grading: Professional grading by reputable services like PCGS or NGC can significantly impact the value and confirm its authenticity.
  • Average prices: Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollars have sold for a wide range of prices depending on their condition.
  • Lower grades: Prices can start from around $50 or more for lower grades, such as AU53 (About Uncirculated).
  • Higher grades: Coins in higher grades like MS66 can fetch several hundreds of dollars, sometimes close to a thousand or more.
  • High-grade examples: A high-grade example like an MS68 has sold for over $5,000 at auction.
  • Uncirculated: Prices for uncirculated coins can reach several hundred to a few thousand dollars.
  • Potential: In top condition (MS68 or higher), it is estimated that the value can reach up to $5,000 or more.
  • A 2000-P Wounded Eagle Sacagawea Dollar in MS68 grade sold for $5,160 in 2017.
  • Other sales have ranged from under a hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on the specific coin and the auction or sale platform.
  • If you believe you have a Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollar, it’s recommended to consult with a reputable coin dealer or have it professionally graded for an accurate valuation.

In summary, a Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollar can be a valuable find, and its rarity and condition are key factors determining its specific value.

The 2000-P “Wounded Eagle” Sacagawea Dollar is so-named because of a raised die flaw that cuts across the eagle’s belly (see the attribution image above). As of January 2012, this variety remains elusive, with PCGS showing a population of 115 examples in all grades.
