The U.S. Mint did not produce silver dollar coins in 1957. However, they did issue Franklin Half Dollars containing 90% silver that year.

Value of a 1957 Franklin Half Dollar

  • Very Fine Condition: Around $13.
  • Extremely Fine Condition: Approximately $14.
  • High Grades (Uncirculated/Proof): Can command significantly higher prices, particularly for specimens in exceptional condition, [one Proof-68 example realizing $2,640 at auction].

  • Condition: A coin’s state of preservation, including wear, scratches, and damage, significantly influences its value.
  • Mint Mark: The presence and location of a mint mark (e.g., “D” for Denver) can affect rarity and value.
  • Rarity: Coins with specific features, such as Full Bell Lines (FBL), are considered rarer and command higher prices.
  • Collector Demand: The popularity of Franklin Half Dollars among collectors also plays a role in their value.

While not coins, it’s worth mentioning that the U.S. Treasury issued Silver Certificates in 1957. These were paper currency redeemable for a dollar’s worth of silver bullion until the mid-1960s.

Value of a 1957 Silver Certificate

  • Average Circulated Condition: Typically valued between $2 to $4.
  • Uncirculated Condition: Can fetch around $10 to $15.
  • Star Notes or Special Features: May command slightly higher prices to collectors.

Note: Always consult a professional coin dealer or appraiser for an accurate valuation of your specific coin or certificate, as prices can fluctuate based on market conditions and the unique characteristics of each item.

What is a 1957 $1 bill with a star on it?

Great question! When a currency note is deemed imperfect in its manufacture, it is replaced with a Star Note which bears a star before or after the serial number. Star Notes are scarcer than regular issues, as only a limited number are produced and fewer still are placed in circulation.

How do I tell if my 1957 dollar bill is worth anything?

Good point! Their worth depends on rarity, serial number, condition, and specialty attributes. Common 1935 and 1957 series notes are usually valued slightly above face value. However, rare notes, especially those with star serial numbers, fancy patterns, or error prints, may command high prices at auction.

Thanks for asking. The 1957 edition of the Franklin Half Dollar carries a very reasonable premium. A 1957 mint year half dollar in very fine condition may be bought or sold for about $13. The same coin in extremely fine condition may be bought or sold for about $14.
