Several United States coins have depicted a buffalo, or more accurately, an American bison.

  • Minted between 1913 and 1938, it’s also known as the Indian Head Nickel because its obverse (front) features a profile of a Native American chief.
  • The reverse (back) side showcases an American Bison (commonly called a buffalo).
  • The design was created by sculptor James Earle Fraser.
  • The U.S. Mint launched this program in 2006.
  • It is a one-ounce, 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold proof coin and a collector’s version of the American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin.
  • Its designs are based on Fraser’s 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel.
  • The American Buffalo Gold Coin is considered one of the purest gold coins globally.
  • In 2001, a commemorative silver dollar was minted, featuring a reproduction of Fraser’s design.
  • 500,000 of these were minted, selling out in weeks and raising 5 million dollars for the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian.

Both the Buffalo Nickel and the American Buffalo Gold Coin are popular with collectors and investors due to their iconic design and historical significance.

Thanks for asking. In this facility, a total number of 448,320,000 nickels were struck in 2005. Such a high mintage results in the value not more than its face value. However, when the condition is uncirculated or mint-state, the coin’s costs even more. From MS63 to MS67, the coin value ranges from $5 to $1,150.
