The phrase “Patria o Muerte” (Homeland or Death) is a significant motto associated with the Cuban Revolution and has appeared on Cuban coins.

Here’s a breakdown of its relevance to Cuban coins:

  • Meaning: “Patria o Muerte, Venceremos” (Homeland or Death, We Shall overcome) was adopted as Cuba’s official national motto in 1960. It reflects a defiant stance against perceived threats and a determination to defend the revolution’s ideals.
  • Appearance on Coins: The motto has been incorporated into the design of some Cuban coins, most notably replacing the previous “Patria y Libertad” (Homeland and Liberty). This change is considered a significant variation in coin design.
  • Historical context: The phrase originated from a speech by Fidel Castro following the 1960 La Coubre explosion. It became a powerful rallying cry and was used by figures like Che Guevara to symbolize Cuba’s position against foreign interference.
  • Modern interpretation: While “Patria o Muerte” remains a symbol of the Cuban Revolution, some contemporary Cuban musicians and protesters have adopted the slogan “Patria y Vida” (Homeland and Life) to express dissent and advocate for change. This reflects a shift in focus from defending the revolution at all costs to emphasizing the importance of life and individual well-being.

In essence, “Patria o Muerte” coins are more than just currency; they represent a significant historical and political period in Cuba, symbolizing its revolutionary spirit and ongoing struggles.

Under 10,000 of this coins were created and today they can be worth hundreds of dollars in the right condition. The coin has a bust of Lady Liberty modeled by Leonor Molina on one side and the Cuban Coat of Arms on the other side. This silver coin is a must have for any Cuban numismatic.

The thing to remember here is that it is not illegal to buy and sell Cuban coins inside the US. There is a ban on importing things from Cuba after a certain date, but those that are here are pretty much legal to sell and those before that date are always legal to sell.
