Why Your Sacagawea Dollar Coin Has No Date: Check the Edge

Many Sacagawea dollar coins appear to have no date on the front or back, particularly those minted from 2009 onwards. This is not an error; the date was moved to the edge of the coin along with the mint mark and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.

The US Mint made this change in 2009 with the introduction of the Native American $1 Coin Program, which continued to feature Sacagawea on the obverse (front) but introduced new reverse (back) designs each year to honor different contributions of Native American tribes and individuals to the development of the United States and its history. The change to the coin’s edge was part of this redesign.

To find the date on Sacagawea dollar coins minted in 2009 or later, you need to examine the edge of the coin. The lettering is often shallow, which can make it difficult to see without close inspection.

It’s important to note that while the absence of a date on the obverse or reverse is normal for these coins, some genuine error coins exist where the edge lettering is missing entirely. These missing edge lettering errors can be valuable to collectors. However, some individuals may attempt to remove the edge lettering to create a fake error coin, so it’s always best to consult with a reputable coin dealer for authentication if you suspect you have a genuine error.

In summary, if your Sacagawea dollar coin doesn’t have a date on the front or back, check the edge. Most likely, you’ll find the date inscribed there, which is a normal feature of these coins from 2009 onwards.

Great question! Value of Native American Dollars (2009-Present)
After 8 years of the Sacagawea Dollars, the United States Mint began to try new designs. Thus, came the Native American Dollar Coins. One thing that you can note about the new designs is that there is no longer a date or a mint mark visible on the dollar.

However, most dateless Buffalo nickels are not considered rare or valuable, so collectors who are keeping their coin for personal use may consider using a chemical treatment to bring out its date.

Great question! The famous 2000-D Sacagawea Dollar and South Carolina Quarter mule is a rare coin error that features two different designs on the obverse and reverse. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Native American woman Sacagawea, while the reverse shows the design of the South Carolina state quarter.
