The phrase “E Pluribus Unum” (meaning “Out of many, one”) holds significant historical and cultural weight for the United States, appearing on its currency and official seal.

Here’s a breakdown of its connection to coins:

  • Origin on US coins: “E Pluribus Unum” first appeared on US coins in 1795, gracing the reverse of the half-eagle ($5 gold) coin, reflecting its presence on the Great Seal of the United States.
  • Mandatory inscription: The Coinage Act of 1873 made the inscription of “E Pluribus Unum” a legal requirement on all US coins.
  • Contemporary usage: Today, all US coins, including the Presidential dollars (where it’s on the edge along with “In God We Trust,” year, and mint mark), display this motto.
  • Morgan Dollars: You can find “E Pluribus Unum” on Morgan silver dollars, a well-known series of coins.
  • Significance: The phrase signifies the union of the states into a single nation, a central theme in US history and identity.

In average circulated condition the coins sell for between $20 and $35. In average uncirculated condition they sell for $30 to $50. It is not until the coins are in mint conditions (and usually higher grade mint states) that the prices can rise significantly.

I can help with that. Definition: E pluribus unum means ” one out of many ” in Latin. It is the motto on the official seal of the United States and on several U.S. coins. This means that even though there are many different people and states in the United States, we all come together as one nation.

From my experience, E Pluribus Unum. Educational Notes. “ Out of many, one.” This is the literal translation for the motto of the United States of America. It was a motto suggested by a committee on July 4, 1776.

Great question! Mint. Despite their perhaps seemingly elusive nature, the vast majority of these coins are extremely common and still only worth their face value of one dollar. The first silver dollar coins were minted in 1794.
