To “mint a coin” means to manufacture or produce coins at a facility called a mint.

Here’s a closer look at what that entails:

  • Production: Minting involves the entire process of creating coins, from the initial design to the final stages of striking and distribution.
  • Design and Dies: It starts with artists creating designs for the coins, which are then used to engrave hardened steel dies. These dies are essentially molds that will imprint the coin’s design.
  • Coin Blanks (Planchets): Metal is prepared, often in large strips, and then cut into round discs called coin blanks or planchets.
  • Striking: The planchets are placed in powerful presses, and the dies are brought together forcefully to imprint the design onto both sides of the metal. This process can involve significant pressure, sometimes up to 100 metric tons for circulating coins.
  • Finishing & Quality Control: After striking, the coins may undergo further steps like cleaning, annealing (heating and cooling to improve durability), and creating a raised rim around the edge (upsetting). Finally, the coins are inspected, counted, and packaged for circulation or distribution.

Essentially, minting is the carefully controlled industrial process of transforming raw metal into the standardized and durable coins we use as currency.

Great question! Minting, coining or coinage is the process of manufacturing coins using a kind of stamping, the process used in both hammered coinage and milled coinage.
