The value of a 1972 Eisenhower dollar coin can vary greatly depending on several factors, including its condition, mintmark, and any potential errors.

Here’s a breakdown of the potential values:

  • Circulated condition (common varieties): A 1972 Eisenhower dollar in circulated condition is typically worth between $1.05 and $1.50.
  • Uncirculated condition (common varieties): The value increases for uncirculated coins, with a 1972 Eisenhower dollar selling for around $2.90 to $12.00 depending on its type.
  • Silver-clad 1972-S Eisenhower dollars: These coins were struck in San Francisco for collectors and contain 40% silver.

– In circulated condition, these can be worth between $12.75 and $14.
– In uncirculated condition, they can fetch as much as $3,000.
– In certified MS 69 condition, one sold for $2204.99.

  • 1972 Type 2 Eisenhower dollars: These are the most sought-after variety of 1972 Eisenhower dollars, characterized by a lack of islands off the coast of Florida on the globe depicted on the reverse.

– A circulated 1972 Type 2 Eisenhower dollar can be worth between $17.50 and $20.
– In uncirculated condition, these can sell for over $100.
– One in almost uncirculated condition is listed for sale at $83.32.
– One certified MS66 is for sale for $1250.

  • Proof coins: Proof coins are special editions made for collectors and often have a mirrored finish.

– A Proof 70 silver 1972-S Ike Dollar, professionally graded, is for sale for $314.

  • Error coins: Mistakes made during the minting process can create rare and valuable error coins.

– For example, a 1972-S Double Die Obverse and Double Die Reverse Eisenhower Dollar, certified MS67, is available for $30,000.

  • Rarity: Coins with limited mintage or that are hard to find tend to be more valuable.
  • Condition/Grade: The better the coin’s condition, the higher its grade and value. Professional grading services assess coins based on factors like strike, surface preservation, luster, and overall appearance.
  • Demand: Collector interest in a particular coin can significantly influence its price.
  • Metal Content: The presence of precious metals, like the 40% silver in the 1972-S Eisenhower dollar, adds intrinsic value.

In conclusion, while a standard circulated 1972 Eisenhower dollar may only be worth slightly more than face value, certain varieties, such as the 1972-S silver-clad or the 1972 Type 2, can command significantly higher prices among collectors. It’s recommended to consult with a reputable coin dealer or professional appraiser to accurately assess the value of your specific coin.

How can I tell if my 1972 Eisenhower Dollar is silver?

Look for a Silver or Copper Stripe
If your Ike dollar has an ā€œSā€ mint mark on the obverse, it is silver clad, or 40% silver. You can also check the edge of the coin for a silver stripe. If you find one, you most likely have a 40% silver, or silver clad Eisenhower dollar.
