The value of a 1980 Lincoln Memorial Cent (penny) generally falls into these categories:

  • Common circulated coins: Most 1980 pennies found in circulation are worth their face value, or slightly more due to their copper content (around 2-3 cents). However, melting pennies for their copper is illegal in the U.S.
  • High-grade (uncirculated) coins:

– MS66 RD (Red designation indicating original mint luster): $10-$25.
– MS67 RD : $80-$250.
– MS68 RD : Rare, can exceed $1,000, especially with certification.

  • Proof Coins (San Francisco Mint – “S” mint mark):

– PR69 DCAM (Deep Cameo): $15-$40.
– PR70 DCAM : $100-$250+.

  • Error varieties: These can significantly increase the value of a 1980 penny. Common errors to look for include:

– Doubled Die Obverse (DDO): Look for doubling in the date “1980,” “LIBERTY,” or “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Values can range from $50 – $500+, depending on clarity and condition. One such coin sold for over $550.
– Off-Center Strikes: When the planchet isn’t properly centered during striking, part of the design is missing. Values range from $10-$200+ depending on the degree of off-center strike and whether the date/mint mark is visible.
– Broadstrikes: When the retaining collar fails, the coin’s metal flows outward, resulting in a wider, flatter coin with no defined rim. Values range from $15-$100+.
– Clipped Planchets: Errors where part of the planchet is missing, resulting in curved or straight clips on the edge. Values range from $10-$75+.
– Struck on Wrong Planchet: Pennies struck on blanks meant for other coins (like dimes) are rare and can be worth $100-$2,500+.
– Die Cracks/Cuds: Raised lines or blobs caused by a cracked or broken die. Values can range from $5-$100+.
– Double Struck: When a coin is struck more than once. Values range from $75-$500+, with more dramatic examples potentially selling for more.

In summary, most 1980 pennies hold little value beyond face value or a small amount for their copper content. However, coins in exceptional condition (especially uncirculated) or with rare errors can be worth significantly more to collectors.

      Doubled Die Obverse (DDO)
A 1980 DDO penny occurs when the die itself has a misalignment during the hubbing process. This causes design elements to appear doubled on the struck coin. What to look for: Noticeable doubling in the date “1980”, the word “LIBERTY”, or “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
