Here’s information regarding 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollar coin errors and varieties:

  • Wide Rim (Near Date) vs. Narrow Rim (Far Date) (1979-P):

– In 1979, the Philadelphia mint produced two varieties of the Susan B. Anthony dollar: the Wide Rim (Near Date) and the Narrow Rim (Far Date).
– Wide Rim (Near Date): This scarcer variety features a thicker rim with the date positioned noticeably closer to the edge. [According to Littleton Coin] , this variety is desirable among collectors. It can be identified by the date being very close (about the width of the numeral 1) to the rim.
– Narrow Rim (Far Date): This is the more common variety with a thinner rim and the date positioned farther from the edge.

  • 1979-S Proof Type 1 (Blob Mint Mark) vs. Type 2 (Clear Mint Mark):

– The 1979-S Proof Susan B. Anthony dollar exists in two types, based on the appearance of the “S” mint mark.
– Type 1 (Blob Mint Mark): This type resulted from a worn punch, causing the mint mark to appear indistinct, like a blob.
– Type 2 (Clear Mint Mark): A new punch was used later in 1979, resulting in a clear and well-formed “S” mint mark. The Type 2 is scarcer and more sought after by collectors.

  • Clipped Planchets: These errors occur when a portion of the coin’s edge is missing or “clipped”.
  • Off-Center Strikes: The design appears misaligned or shifted on the coin due to an error during the striking process.
  • Struck Through Errors: These happen when an object or debris gets between the die and the planchet during striking, causing parts of the design to be weak or missing.
  • Coin Blob Errors: These refer to an unusual blob-like deformity on the coin’s surface, often caused by excessive die wear or debris on the die, which can obscure parts of the design.
  • 1979-D Large Date with D Mintmark Error (Struck in Philadelphia): A small number of 1979 dollars struck in Philadelphia mistakenly bear a Denver mintmark (“D”). Finding this error in good condition is rare.
  • Doubled Die and Wide Rim Error (1979-D): A 1979 Denver mint Susan B. Anthony Dollar with a doubled die error, where the lettering in “TRUST” is misaligned, along with a wide rim error, can be quite valuable.
  • Double Reverse Die and Filled In D (Blob) Error (1979-D): A 1979 Denver mint coin with a double reverse die, a filled-in “D” mintmark, and a wide rim error is considered a highly collectible vintage item.

Important Note: Auction records and potential values should not be considered as typical prices, as actual values depend on the coin’s condition, demand, and market timing. It is recommended to consult with a reputable coin dealer or numismatist for accurate valuation of specific coins.

I can help with that. Like the Philadelphia-struck coins, the 1979 Dollar coins bearing the “S” mint mark are more valuable. The coins struck in San Francisco had a few errors and varieties with the highest value. These coins can be priced between $28 and $4,850 depending on the condition, errors, and strike.

These “Filled S” (Type 1) Anthony dollar Proofs were due to a worn mint mark punch. Late in the year, the punch was replaced and much scarcer 1979 “Clear S” (Type 2) Proofs were created. Honoring women’s rights activist Susan B.

A regular 1979 Susan B. Anthony Dollar with a “Narrow Rim” will have the rim of the coin separated from the date of the coin. A 1979 “Wide Rim” variety or the scarcer variety from 1979-P Susan B. Anthony Dollars, will have the date of the coin very close to the rim of the coin, and almost touching.
