In 1970, the US Mint did not produce any dollar coins for general circulation . However, several types of Eisenhower dollar coins were issued starting in 1971, including some 40% silver-clad versions for collectors. These were minted in San Francisco and are often found in special packaging or sets.

  • Most Eisenhower dollars are not made of silver and are only worth face value, [according to JM Bullion] and [Reddit users].
  • 40% silver Eisenhower dollars can be identified by an “S” mint mark (on the obverse, under Eisenhower’s bust) or by the edge of the coin, which will be a solid silver color with a light blue streak, not showing any copper. These coins are worth their silver melt value, which is currently about $12.20. Their numismatic value (value to collectors) can range from $13.50 to $21,500, depending on the year, type, and condition. For example, a 1976-S silver dollar in mint state (MS) condition can be worth up to $21,500.
  • Clad (copper-nickel) Eisenhower dollars can be identified by the copper stripe visible on their edges. These are generally worth face value, but some uncirculated examples can sell for a small premium, typically around $2-$5.
  • Key dates, rarities, and varieties within the Eisenhower dollar series can be worth significantly more than their silver melt value. For instance, certain 1972 D silver dollars in perfect, uncirculated condition have sold for up to $2,000. Likewise, some 1978 D Eisenhower dollars in pristine, uncirculated condition can sell for as much as $6,000.

In short, while most 1970s Eisenhower dollars are not worth more than face value, some 40% silver issues and rare varieties can be quite valuable to collectors. How to tell if a 1 dollar coin is rare?

Thanks for asking. To ensure your coin is rare, check for minting errors, such as double strikes or planchet flaws, unique designs, or limited editions. The 2007 Sacagawea Dollar, with Edge Lettering, accidentally featuring a Presidential coin’s edge design, is exceptionally valuable due to its rarity, with only one known to exist.
