The value of a 1776-1976 one-dollar coin (Eisenhower Dollar) can vary significantly depending on several factors, including its composition, mint mark, and condition.

Here’s a breakdown of the typical values:

  • These coins were struck at the Philadelphia (no mint mark) and Denver (“D” mint mark) mints.
  • Circulated condition: Generally worth slightly more than their face value, often between $1.05 and $1.50.
  • Uncirculated condition: Can fetch slightly higher prices, ranging from around $2 to $50, depending on their grade and scarcity of certain varieties (Type 1 generally being more valuable).
  • Example: A 1976-D Type 1 in MS63 condition might be valued at around $3.
  • These coins have an “S” mint mark, indicating they were struck at the San Francisco Mint.
  • Melt Value: Worth at least their metal content, which is currently around $11.94, according to [NGC].
  • Circulated condition: Values typically range from $12.50 to $13.75.
  • Uncirculated condition: Can be worth significantly more, ranging from $10 to $7000 or even higher for pristine, uncirculated examples, [according to NGC].
  • Proof versions: Often command higher prices, [according to NGC].
  • 1976 No-S Proof Dollar: Only one example of this silver proof coin without an “S” mint mark is known to exist, making it extremely rare and valuable.
  • Error Coins: Look for doubling, filled mint marks, off-center strikes, or unusual textures as these might increase the value of your coin.

From my experience, U.S. dollar coins worth money are hard to identify at a glance. Their value lies in where they were minted, their historical significance, mintage, precious metal content, whether they are error coins, and their condition.
