The United States has four currently active coin-producing mints responsible for producing coinage for circulation, numismatic (collector) items, and bullion.

These are located in:

  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (“P” mint mark): Produces most circulating coinage, collector coins, and medals. The Philadelphia Mint is also the site where master dies for all U.S. coinage are created, and where the Mint’s engraving and design departments are located.
  • Denver, Colorado (“D” mint mark): A major producer of circulating coins and coin dies, with a capacity of over 50 million coins per day.
  • San Francisco, California (“S” mint mark): Primarily dedicated to producing proof coinage (collectible coins with a highly polished, mirror-like finish), though it has historically produced circulating coins and also created a limited amount of circulating quarters in recent years with the “S” mint mark.
  • West Point, New York (“W” mint mark): Produces American Eagle bullion coins (gold, silver, platinum, palladium), commemorative coins, and some limited mintage circulating coins (like quarters with the “W” mint mark).

In addition to these, the U.S. Mint also maintains the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox, Kentucky, which functions as a secure storage facility for the nation’s gold and silver reserves and does not produce coins. The Mint headquarters responsible for administrative functions and policy is located in Washington, D.C., but it also does not produce coins.

Thanks for asking. The U.S. Mint makes the nation’s circulating coins, as well as bullion and numismatic (collector) coins. The Mint’s four production facilities in Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point use a variety of machines and processes.
