The earliest coin considered to be an official US coin is the Fugio cent, also known as the Franklin cent . It was minted in 1787, before the establishment of the official U.S. Mint in 1792.

However, the [U.S. Mint website] states that the first circulating coins were the 1793 copper cents. There is also a debate about whether the 1792 half disme, a silver coin, was intended for circulation or was an experimental issue.

In conclusion, while there might be some debate, the Fugio Cent is generally recognized as the oldest official coin intended for circulation in the United States.

Great question! The Flowing Hair dollar was the first dollar coin issued by the United States federal government. The coin was minted in 1794 and 1795; its size and weight were based on the Spanish dollar, which was popular in trade throughout the Americas.

The first quarter made by the U.S. Mint in 1796 was silver. The designs from 1796 to 1930 showed Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse.

The first coins struck in the North American Colonies were silver shillings, sixpences, and threepences, made by silversmiths John Hull and Robert Sanderson at a mint in Boston from 1652 to 1682, by order of the general court of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
