The United States Mint released a Presidential $1 Coin honoring Andrew Johnson, the 17th President, on February 17, 2011 . It was the first of four Presidential Dollars issued in 2011 and the 17th coin in the overall series. The coin was part of the Presidential $1 Coin Program, which aimed to honor all America’s presidents.

Here is information about the Andrew Johnson dollar coin:

  • Release Date: February 17, 2011
  • Obverse (heads): A portrait of Andrew Johnson faces left. Inscriptions include “ANDREW JOHNSON,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “17TH PRESIDENT,” and “1865-1869”. The obverse was designed by Don Everhart, United States Mint Artistic Sculptor–Engraver.
  • Reverse (tails): A rendition of the Statue of Liberty is featured. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “$1”. The reverse was also designed by Don Everhart.
  • Edge: The year of minting or issuance (2011), “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and the mint of origin are incused.
  • Composition: Copper with manganese brass cladding (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel).
  • Weight: 8.1 g (another source says 8.07g)
  • Diameter: 26.5 mm
  • Thickness: 1.8 mm (another source says 2.0 mm)
  • Mintage: 35,560,000 at the Philadelphia Mint and 37,100,000 at the Denver Mint. The 2011 coins were the last year of high production for Presidential Dollars, [according to YouTube].

The value of an Andrew Johnson dollar coin varies. Circulated coins are readily available at face value or for a small premium. Uncirculated coins, especially those with errors like an upside-down edge lettering error, can be valuable collectibles, sometimes selling for hundreds or thousands of dollars. You can find these coins for sale from various online retailers and coin dealers.

Andrew Jackson dollar coins in circulated condition hold a face value of $1.00. However, their market value appreciates significantly when in uncirculated condition.

Thanks for asking. The most expensive Presidential Dollar coin is the 2009 SMS William Henry Harrison with missing edge lettering, graded 69/70, which can sell for up to $2,450. The least expensive among the top valuable coins is the 2007 SMS Jefferson dollar with missing edge lettering, graded 67, valued at $600.

Good point! The traditional inscriptions “E Pluribus Unum,” the date of issuance and the mint mark have been moved to the edge of the coin, making it unique among circulating coins.

The standout is the 2000 one dollar mule, an error coin created when the wrong dies were used, resulting in a heavier rim on the obverse (heads) side. It’s estimated that only around 6,000 of these mule coins were made, which is less than 0.1% of the total coins minted that year.
