The value of an Indian Head Penny, minted from 1859 to 1909, is primarily determined by its date, condition, and any specific varieties.

  • The most sought-after Indian Head Pennies are the 1877 and 1909-S , both considered key dates due to their low mintages.

– An 1877 Indian Head Penny in good condition can be valued between $900 and $1,400. In fine condition, the price can be between $1,550 and $2,200. In very fine condition, it can range from $4,000 to $5,000. Uncirculated examples are even more valuable, reaching prices of $3,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the grade.
– A 1909-S Indian Head Penny in good condition can be around $450 to $600. In fine condition, it’s worth about $600 to $800. Coins in MS60 condition and above can sell for $1,500 to $2,000 or more.

  • Other important dates and varieties include:

– 1864 “L” on Ribbon: Circulated examples can be worth $50 to $100, while uncirculated grades might fetch $200 to $500+. An example in PCGS grade MS66 recently sold for $3,150.
– 1908-S: In good condition, this penny usually sells for around $100. In high-grade conditions, it can be anywhere between $400 and $1,000, and even higher for uncirculated examples, [according to YouTube].
– 1873 Double Liberty: This variety starts at more than $150 in a grade of Good-4 and increases significantly in higher grades.
– 1888 Last 8 Over 7: This overdate variety is extremely rare and can reach five figures at auction.

  • Proof coins of any year are generally scarce and trade for a minimum of $100.

The condition of an Indian Head Penny plays a significant role in its value. Coins are graded on a scale of 1 to 70, with higher grades signifying better condition and therefore higher value. Copper and bronze coins are also given a color designation (Red, Red Brown, or Brown) which further affects their value, with red being the most desirable.

For a more detailed valuation of your specific Indian Head Penny, it’s recommended to consult a coin grading guide, such as the Red Book, or seek the opinion of a professional numismatist.
