In coin grading, MS60 is a grade within the Mint State (MS) category, specifically referring to the lowest end of the Mint State scale.

Here’s what an MS60 coin grade signifies:

  • Uncirculated but Flawed: An MS60 coin is considered uncirculated , meaning it has no evidence of circulation wear , as it has not been used in commerce.
  • Surface Imperfections: Despite being uncirculated, an MS60 coin will often have noticeable imperfections . These can include:

– Bagmarks: Scratches or abrasions caused by contact with other coins within a mint bag.
– Poor Strike: The coin may not have been perfectly struck, resulting in some softness or lack of detail.
– Poor Luster: The original mint luster might be dull, washed out, or even absent in places.
– Damage Spots: Other blemishes or damage spots might be present on the surface.
– Hairlines: Fine scratches or hairlines may be visible on the surface.
– Rim Nicks: Nicks or damage along the rim of the coin are possible.

In essence, an MS60 coin is still considered “new” from the mint, but it has sustained cosmetic damage during or after the minting process, reducing its overall appeal compared to higher-graded Mint State coins.

Great question! Uncirculated (MS-60) – A coin that has no trace of wear, but which may show a number of contact marks, and whose surface may be spotted or lack some luster. Choice About Uncirculated (AU-55) – Evidence of friction on high points of design. Most of the mint luster remains.

Coins with no wear at all are alternately referred to as Uncirculated (Unc.), Brilliant Uncirculated (BU), and Mint State (MS). When a numerical grade is assigned to an uncirculated coin, it goes along with the abbreviation MS, such as MS-60.

I can help with that. Gem Uncirculated (MS-65, 66): Minimal markings or imperfections, a nice original look with a good strike showing detail on the high points of the coin. Superb Gem Uncirculated (MS-67, 68, 69): Exceptional coins with only miniscule imperfections, a lot of “eye appeal” and a good strike.

MS-66 – Has above average quality of surface and mint luster, with no more than three or four minor or noticeable contact marks. A few light hairlines may show under magnification, or there may be one or two light scuff marks showing. Eye appeal is above average and very pleasing for the date and mint.
