The value of a silver half dollar coin depends on several factors, including the year it was minted, its silver content, its condition or grade, and its rarity.

  • Pre-1965 half dollars : These coins, including Franklin, Walking Liberty, and Barber Half Dollars, contain 90% silver. The melt value of these coins is determined by multiplying the current spot price of silver by 0.3616. As of August 12, 2025, the melt value of these coins is around $13.73 – $13.76, [according to Golden Eagle Coins] and [NGC] respectively. However, some coins, especially in excellent condition or with rare features, can be worth much more.
  • 1964 Kennedy half dollars : These coins also contain 90% silver and have a melt value similar to the pre-1965 half dollars.
  • 1965-1970 Kennedy half dollars : These coins have a lower silver content of 40%. Their melt value is significantly lower than that of 90% silver coins. As of August 12, 2025, their melt value is about $5.63, according to [NGC].
  • Post-1970 Kennedy half dollars : These coins have no silver content and are only worth their face value of $0.50, unless they have a rare error.
  • Mintage : Low mintage numbers can significantly increase a coin’s value.
  • Condition/Grade : Coins in pristine condition, especially those graded by professional services like NGC or PCGS, are worth more than circulated coins.
  • Rarity/Errors : Coins with rare errors or variations can be highly sought after by collectors.
  • You can estimate the melt value of your silver half dollars by multiplying their silver weight by the current spot price of silver.
  • However, to get a more accurate appraisal of your coin’s numismatic value, it’s best to consult with a professional numismatist or use online resources specializing in coin valuation. You can also research the value of specific dates and mint marks using guides or online databases.

In conclusion, while the melt value of silver half dollars can provide a baseline, their true value depends on a combination of factors related to their silver content, condition, and rarity.

Being minted for only one year, the 1964 Kennedy half dollar is highly desirable by collectors and fans of the 35th President of the United States. The first year of the Kennedy half dollar is the only year the coin was minted containing 90% silver.

Great question! STRUCK IN SILVER – Kennedy Half Dollars issued from 1965 to 1969 were struck in 11.5 grams of 40% silver. No half dollars were struck for circulation in 1970 and beginning in 1971 they were issued as nickel-clad copper coins. It was the only coin in circulation at that time to contain silver.
