The value of a 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar varies significantly depending on its condition and any potential errors or varieties.

  • Circulated condition: A 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar in circulated condition is typically worth between $1.05 and $1.50, according to the NGC Price Guide.
  • Uncirculated condition: In pristine, uncirculated condition, these coins can sell for as much as $2350.
  • Silver content: Some 1971 Eisenhower Dollars were minted in 40% silver and were primarily intended for collectors. These coins are generally more valuable than their copper-nickel clad counterparts.
  • Errors and varieties: Coins with specific errors or variations, such as the “Peg Leg” error or off-center strikes, can be worth significantly more to collectors.
  • Grading: Professional grading by services like NGC or PCGS can significantly influence a coin’s value, especially for higher grades.
  • Condition: Coins in higher grades (e.g., MS65, MS66, MS67) are more valuable than those in lower grades.
  • Mint Mark: The “D” mint mark indicates the coin was struck at the Denver Mint.
  • Mintage: While the 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar had a relatively high mintage of 68,587,424 coins, rarer varieties or those in high-grade condition are still sought after by collectors.
  • Silver Content: Some Eisenhower Dollars, particularly from the San Francisco Mint (1971-S), were composed of 40% silver, making them more valuable.

Note: The market for coins can be volatile, and prices can fluctuate based on demand and other factors.

From my experience, 1971-D Half Dollar Struck on 40% Silver Planchet
Some 1971 half-dollar coins were made using leftover silver. These are very rare and can sell for $10,000 or more. You can check if your coin has silver by looking at the edge—if you see copper, it’s not silver.

Even though they were special order coins, some 40% Eisenhower silver dollars still made their way into circulation. Besides checking for an “S” mintmark on the obverse or front of the coin, collectors can check the edge of the coin for a copper stripe.
