During Thomas Jefferson’s presidency (1801-1809), several coin denominations were minted by the United States. The value of these coins today can vary significantly based on their condition, scarcity, and specific characteristics. Here’s a summary of some examples:

  • The [1801 Draped Bust Dollar] had a mintage of only 54,454 pieces, making it a scarce coin.
  • Circulated 1801 Draped Bust Dollars can be worth between $1,200 and $20,750, according to the NGC Price Guide.
  • An example of an 1801 Draped Bust Dollar in circulated condition is offered on eBay for $1345.43.
  • An 1801 Draped Bust Half Dollar with NGC VF Details and a hole, is offered on eBay for $1349.10.
  • A particularly high-grade example, an 1801 $1 BB-213 Draped Bust Dollar graded PCGS MS62, is offered on eBay for $82,799.99.
  • A nearly uncirculated 1809 Classic Head Half Cent is offered on LiveAuctioneers for $130.
  • The estimated value of an 1809 Classic Head Half Cent in average condition is $151, and it can be worth $3,979 or more in uncirculated (MS+) condition.
  • An [1809 1/2c Circle In O C-4 Classic Head Half Cent] is offered on eBay for $395.

Note: The phrase “Thomas Jefferson 1801-1809 coin” on some platforms like eBay refers to the Thomas Jefferson Presidential Dollar Coin that was released in 2007 as part of the Presidential $1 Coin Program, commemorating Jefferson’s time in office, not a coin minted during his actual presidency. It’s crucial to differentiate between coins actually minted during Jefferson’s term and commemorative coins issued later.

  • Condition: Coins in better condition (higher grades) are generally more valuable.
  • Mint Mark: While the Philadelphia Mint produced the 1801 Draped Bust Dollar, other mint marks on different denominations might indicate varying scarcity.
  • Die Varieties: Some early U.S. coins have variations in the dies used to strike them, and certain die varieties can be more desirable to collectors.

Disclaimer: Coin values are subject to change based on market demand and other factors. It’s recommended to consult with a professional coin grader for an accurate assessment of a specific coin’s value.

      Good point! Condition and Grading
Higher-grade examples always boost the coin’s value. Examples graded MS-65 or higher (i.e., Mint State in other words) by reputable grading agencies like PCGS or NGC can be for $5 to $20. Still 20 times as valuable as the original coin itself.
