There have been reports of coins being placed in car door handles as a potential theft tactic.

Here’s how it is alleged to work

  1. Coin Placement: A coin (or other small object) is lodged in the passenger side door handle, usually in a way that prevents the handle from fully closing.
  2. Locking Prevention: When the driver tries to lock the car using the remote, the coin prevents that specific door from locking properly.
  3. Theft Opportunity: The driver may assume the car is locked and walk away. Thieves, who may have been observing, can then return and open the unlocked door, [according to Trashrite].
  • Effectiveness: While this tactic has been reported, some sources question its effectiveness on modern central locking systems. Some mechanics believe that car door locks cannot be easily disabled in this manner.
  • Precautionary Measures: Regardless of the tactic’s reliability, it is always wise to be vigilant and take precautions:

– Always check all car doors manually after locking the vehicle , especially in public places.
– Listen for the lock confirmation beep or check the visual cues to ensure all doors are indeed locked.
– If you notice a coin or any unusual object in your door handle, remove it immediately.

A woman who shares a lot of travel tips has shared a genius idea that will help you in this regard. She suggests that whenever you stay in a hotel, you put a coin in the doorknob before you go to sleep. Since the coin remains static on the doorknob, the method can help you know if you are safe.

Great question! The practice known as “car coining” is when a few coins are tossed onto the floor of a newly purchased vehicle as a sign of good luck. Whether or not it brings you good luck, having spare changes is never a bad thing.

Storage for Coins: They provided a convenient place for drivers to store loose change, which was often needed for tolls, parking meters, or vending machines.
Organization: These slots helped keep the interior tidy by offering a designated spot for coins, preventing them from rolling around or getting lost in the car.
