A privy mark on a coin is a small, unique symbol or design element added to the coin’s regular design.

Unlike a mint mark which primarily designates the location where the coin was minted, a privy mark serves various other purposes, [according to APMEX] . These can include:

  • Commemorating an event or anniversary: For example, the “V75” privy mark on certain 2020 US Mint coins celebrated the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • Celebrating a historical or cultural theme: [Bullion Exchanges states] the Royal Canadian Mint has used privy marks to represent national or royal events, like a small maple leaf for Canada.
  • Denoting a special edition or limited mintage: Privy marks often accompany coins with lower production numbers, making them more collectible.
  • Indicating a specific mint or mintmaster , especially in historical contexts.

Here’s a breakdown of the key aspects of privy marks:

  • Small and distinct: They are typically small and don’t significantly alter the main design of the coin.
  • Adds significance: They enhance a coin’s story and appeal, particularly for collectors.
  • Historical evolution: Originally used for identification and anti-counterfeiting, their modern use has broadened to include commemorative and collector-focused purposes.
  • Distinction from mint marks: While a mint mark solely indicates the minting facility, a privy mark can signify a wider range of information, often relating to the coin’s theme or a special event.

Essentially, privy marks add an extra layer of detail and meaning to coins, making them more interesting and potentially more valuable to collectors.

Privy marks serve as a way for collectors to differentiate between versions of the same coin, but they can also enhance the value of the coin, particularly if the minting run was limited or the design has historical significance.

A privy mark is a small symbol or mark that sometimes appears on coins honouring special or historic occasions, such as coronations and jubilees. Some of the 2023 definitive UK coins feature a special privy mark that takes the form of a Tudor Crown.

A privy mark is a tiny crown symbol stamped onto some coins on the “heads” or “obverse” side – or on the rim. In the case of the King Charles Atlantic Salmon 50p, first minted in 2023 in celebration of Charles’ ascension of the throne, the privy mark is a small Tudor crown.
