The value of a 1972 one dollar coin, also known as an Eisenhower dollar, can vary depending on several factors, primarily its condition and variety.

In general, a circulated 1972 Eisenhower dollar is worth between $1.05 and $1.50. However, coins in pristine, uncirculated condition can sell for much more.

  • Condition: This is the most significant factor. Coins in higher grades (better condition) are more valuable to collectors.
  • Variety: There are three main varieties of the 1972 Eisenhower dollar, distinguished by differences in the depiction of Earth on the reverse.

– Type 1: Features a low-relief, blurry Earth and is the most common variety. Circulated Type 1 coins are worth between $1.50 and $10, while higher-grade examples can fetch $50 or more.
– Type 2: Has a higher-relief, more distinct Earth and is considered rarer than the other two types. Circulated Type 2 coins are worth between $30 and $200, with those in MS65 grade or higher valued at $1,000+.
– Type 3: Displays a well-defined Earth and is the most common variety currently in circulation. Circulated Type 3 coins are worth between $2 and $15, with higher-grade examples valued at $60 or more.

  • Errors: Certain minting errors can significantly increase a coin’s value, with some 1972 Eisenhower dollar errors fetching hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In summary

  • Common circulated 1972 Eisenhower dollar: Worth slightly above face value.
  • Uncirculated 1972 Eisenhower dollar: Can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on the grade and variety.
  • Rare varieties or error coins: Can be worth substantial amounts, with some exceeding $10,000 or even reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars in some cases.

If you are unsure about the value of your 1972 Eisenhower dollar, it is recommended to have it professionally graded by a reputable coin grading service.

From my experience, Type one and type three Ike dollars sell for about a hundred bucks. But the type. Two that sells for over a,000.

Thanks for asking. Look for a Silver or Copper Stripe
If your Ike dollar has an ā€œSā€ mint mark on the obverse, it is silver clad, or 40% silver. You can also check the edge of the coin for a silver stripe. If you find one, you most likely have a 40% silver, or silver clad Eisenhower dollar.
