Sacagawea is the woman featured on the U.S. dollar coin.
Sacagawea was a Shoshone woman who served as a guide and interpreter for the Lewis and Clark expedition from 1804 to 1806. The dollar coin depicting Sacagawea is commonly referred to as the Sacagawea Golden Dollar or, more broadly, as part of the Native American $1 Coin Program. This coin was initially introduced in 2000.
In addition to Sacagawea, Susan B. Anthony, a leader in the women’s suffrage movement, was featured on a previous dollar coin minted from 1979 to 1981 and again in 1999.
Who is the Native American woman on the dollar coin?
From my experience, Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin accepted the recommendation of the Dollar Coin Advisory Committee that the new dollar coin contain an image representing Sacajawea, the Native American woman whose presence was essential to the success of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
