Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, is featured on the Eisenhower dollar coin.

This one-dollar coin was minted by the United States Mint from 1971 through 1978. The Eisenhower Dollar honored both President Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 moon landing.

  • The obverse (heads side) of the coin features a portrait bust of Dwight D. Eisenhower.
  • The reverse (tails side) of the coin, for coins minted between 1971 and 1978, features an eagle landing on the moon, adapted from the Apollo 11 mission insignia.
  • A special reverse design was used for coins minted in 1975 and 1976 to celebrate the nation’s Bicentennial. This design featured a Liberty Bell superimposed on the moon.
  • Eisenhower dollars were minted with two different compositions: copper-nickel clad for circulation and 40% silver for collectors.
  • Circulation strike coins had outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel, clad with a 100% copper core.
  • Collector’s strike coins had outer layers of 80% silver and a center of 20.9% silver.
  • The Eisenhower dollar coins were minted at three locations: Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S).
  • The mint mark is located on the obverse of the coin, beneath Eisenhower’s bust.
  • While most Eisenhower dollars are not particularly rare or valuable, some varieties, like the 1972 Type II Reverse Uncirculated coin, can be worth a premium.
  • The value of an Eisenhower dollar can vary significantly depending on its condition, mint mark, and specific variety.
