In the United States, a 50-cent coin is called a half dollar , or sometimes, informally, a 50-cent piece . The U.S. Mint Coin Classroom (.gov) website explains that the half dollar is the United States’ 50-cent coin.

In other countries, the terminology may be different. For example:

  • Canada: The 50-cent coin is also known as a half dollar or 50¢ piece.
  • Australia: It’s simply called the 50 cent coin , or sometimes just a 50c.
  • United Kingdom: The British decimal fifty pence coin is often shortened to 50p.
  • Eurozone: The 50 euro cent coin (€0.50) is often simply called the 50 cent coin.
