The value of a 1943 silver coin depends heavily on the specific type of coin and its condition.

Here are some examples of 1943 coins and their potential worth:

– Most circulated 1943 steel pennies are worth between $0.10 and $0.50.
– Uncirculated examples can be worth $1 to $5.
– High-grade, certified examples (MS-67 or higher) can fetch hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

  • 1943 Copper Penny (Error Coin):

– These are extremely rare and highly valuable error coins, accidentally struck on copper planchets.
– Only a few dozen are known to exist.
– Authenticated examples are worth approximately $100,000 or more, with some selling for over $1.7 million.

  • 1943 Silver Half Dollar (Liberty Walking):

– These coins were made of 90% silver.
– A 1943-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar in Very Fine (VF) condition is currently listed for $51.50.
– An uncertified AU (Almost Uncirculated) condition 1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollar is listed for $30.
– A certified MS68 (Mint State) 1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollar is listed at $14,000.

  • 1943 Silver Quarter (Washington):

– An ungraded uncirculated 1943 silver Washington quarter would sell for between $10 and $15.
– If professionally graded and receiving a higher Mint grade, it could sell for $20 to $40.

Important factors affecting value:

  • Condition/Grade: Coins in better condition (less wear, scratches, etc.) are generally more valuable.
  • Mint Mark: Pennies from different mints (Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco) can have slight variations in value.
  • Errors: Doubled dies, off-center strikes, or being struck on the wrong planchet (like the rare 1943 copper penny) can significantly increase the coin’s value.

To accurately determine the value of your specific 1943 silver coin:

  • Consult with a reputable coin dealer or numismatic expert.
  • Consider having the coin professionally graded by a grading service.

Introduction. Most steel pennies are worth between 20 cents and 20 dollars, with prices for 1943 penny error coins like the 1943-D doubled mintmark variety reaching several hundred dollars. However, the story of these distinctive wartime coins goes far beyond their typical values.

I can help with that. See, some pennies produced in 1943 were mistakenly struck on copper planchets. These alloys consisted of 95% copper and 5% tin. The Mint struck only about 40 of these coins, with only 13 confirmed to exist so far.
