Based on the provided search results, here’s information on the value of a 1971 “Liberty” dollar coin (most likely referring to the Eisenhower dollar):

  • The 1971 Eisenhower dollar, despite having “Liberty” on the obverse, is a very common coin.
  • The vast majority of these circulating coins are worth close to their face value, which is one dollar.
  • However, the value can increase depending on the condition of the coin (graded as Mint State) and any errors or varieties it may have.
  • A circulated 1971 Eisenhower dollar with the “D” mint mark (Denver Mint) is worth between $1.05 and $1.50 according to the NGC Price Guide.
  • Uncirculated examples (Mint State) can sell for much higher, with top-grade examples (MS67+) potentially fetching $100–$200 or more.
  • An MS68 graded 1971-D Eisenhower dollar was sold for $3100.
  • 1971 Liberty Eisenhower One Dollar Coins without a mint mark (Philadelphia Mint) in good condition have been listed for $1400 on eBay.
  • 1971 “S” (San Francisco Mint) proof Eisenhower dollars, which were specially minted for collectors and have a shiny appearance, generally sell for modest premiums in mint state grades, with an average auction price of $25.
  • However, proof coins with a specific Type 1 reverse, showing a less-relief design and more detailed features like eagle breast feathers and Caribbean islands, are considerably rarer and can be valued at thousands of dollars, depending on their grade (e.g., $35,000 for a PR67 Cameo, $60,000 for a PR69 Deep Cameo).
  • Some 1971 Eisenhower dollars have errors such as a “Peg Leg” where the serif of the “R” in “Liberty” runs into Eisenhower’s head due to overpolishing the obverse die.
  • Circulated “Peg Leg” coins can be worth $10–$40, while a mint state MS68 example has been valued at approximately $6,750.
  • Errors such as double-struck coins can also significantly increase the value, with one such coin graded PR63 selling for nearly $4,000 at auction.

In summary, while most 1971 Eisenhower dollars are worth close to their face value, certain variations, particularly those in high grades or with rare errors, can command substantial prices from collectors.

Thanks for asking. The rare variety of the San Francisco-minted 1971 Proof Eisenhower one-dollar coin does not have the serifs at the bottom of the vertical leg on the “R” in LIBERTY. Some researchers believe that this variety was caused by over-polishing the proof dies (a.k.a. die abrasion).
