Half Crown Coin Value: Factors That Determine Worth and Prices

The value of a British half crown coin can vary significantly depending on several factors. These include the coin’s mint year, condition or grade, and its composition.

Here’s a breakdown of how these factors affect the value of a half crown:

  • Mint year: Half crowns were minted from 1549 until 1970. Older coins, particularly those in good condition, generally have higher numismatic value (value to collectors) than newer ones. For example, a rare 1905 Halfcrown with a mintage of 166,008 can be worth significantly more than a modern half crown.
  • Condition/Grade: The better the condition of a half crown, the higher its value. Coins are graded on a scale of 1 to 70, with higher numbers indicating better condition. Even a small flaw can drastically reduce a coin’s value. A coin graded as Poor 1, indicating heavy circulation and a barely identifiable design, would be worth less than a coin graded MS 70, which is perfectly struck and uncirculated.
  • Composition: The metal content of the half crown also plays a role in its value.

– Silver Half Crowns: Half crowns minted before 1920 were made of sterling silver (92.5% silver). These coins have intrinsic value based on their silver content, in addition to their numismatic value. Some pre-1920 silver half crowns can be purchased for under 50 USD, for example, a 1916 George V Solid Silver Half Crown is available for 19.00 USD.
– 50% Silver Half Crowns: Between 1920 and 1946, the silver content of half crowns was reduced to 50%. A 1923 UK Half Crown (1/2) 50% Silver Nice Coin can be purchased for 17.50 USD.
– Cupro-Nickel Half Crowns: From 1947 to 1970, half crowns were made of cupro-nickel (no silver). A 1949 Great Britain King George VI 1/2 Crown Copper-Nickel Coin is available for 745 USD.

Based on recent market offerings, here are some examples of half crown coin values:

  • British United Kingdom 1/2 Crown Coin (circulated 1887-1892, various grades from Good to Very Fine): Approximately 82.99 USD.
  • 1916 Great Britain 1/2 Half Crown .925 Silver Coin : 22.00 USD.
  • APMEX Silver Half Crown George VI Coin (1942, AU grade): 39.16 USD.
  • Great Britain King George VI 1/2 Crown Copper-Nickel Coin (1949): 745 USD.

It is important to remember that these are just examples, and the actual value of a half crown will depend on its specific characteristics. If you have a half crown coin and want to determine its precise value, consider having it professionally appraised by a reputable coin dealer or numismatic organization. You can also research recent sales of similar coins to get an idea of their market value.

Thanks for asking. A half-crown was 2 shillings 6 pence, or 30 pence. A penny at the time was about 2 cents, so a half-crown was 60 cents. Using u/servical’s inflation calculations, that means about $60 in today’s money.
