The value of a 1776-1976 Bicentennial Kennedy Half Dollar can vary significantly depending on several factors.

Here’s a breakdown

  • Circulated (worn) coins: These are the most common and typically worth close to their face value, or slightly more, in the range of $1.50-$3.00.
  • Uncirculated (mint condition) coins: These are more desirable to collectors and can be worth $5-$20, with higher values for top-grade coins.
  • Proof coins (S mint mark): These were minted in San Francisco and intended for collectors. They generally command higher prices than their circulated or uncirculated counterparts, with values typically ranging from $20-$50.
  • 40% silver coins (S mint mark): These are easily distinguishable by their silver color and were also minted in San Francisco as part of special collector sets. They hold a higher value due to their silver content, generally fetching $20-$50 or more. According to the NGC Price Guide as of August 2025, a circulated 1776-1976 S SILVER Kennedy Half Dollar is worth between $5.75 and $6.25, while a pristine, uncirculated one can sell for as much as $12,500.
  • Error coins: These are considered rare and can be extremely valuable, [fetching hundreds or even thousands of dollars] depending on the type and rarity of the error. Examples include doubled die errors, off-center strikes, and missing clad layers. For instance, a 1776 to 1976 half dollar with a doubled die error showing doubling on “INDEPENDENCE HALL” sold for $5,200.
  • No Mint Mark coins: While millions of these coins were produced in Philadelphia (hence no mint mark), a specific error version with no mint mark has achieved mythical status among collectors. However, most no mint mark Bicentennial half dollars are worth between $1.50 and $3 in circulated condition and between $5 and $20 in uncirculated condition.

In conclusion, while most 1776-1976 Kennedy Half Dollars are not considered rare, certain factors like mint condition, silver content, and especially rare minting errors can significantly increase their value. If you believe you have a valuable coin, it’s recommended to consult with a reputable coin dealer for a professional evaluation.

I can help with that. The bicentennial Kennedy Half Dollar features a 1776-1976 date on the obverse and a portrait of Philadelphia Pennsylvania’s Independence Hall with the words “200 YEARS OF FREEDOM” on the reverse of the coin to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the United States of America.
