The 2000-P “Wounded Eagle” Sacagawea dollar coin is a valuable and rare error coin . It’s characterized by a raised die flaw that appears as a spear or gash across the eagle’s belly on the reverse side. This imperfection occurred due to a damaged die during the minting process, and only a limited number were released into circulation.

The value of a Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollar can vary significantly depending on its condition (grade).

  • Circulated coins: In lower grades, a circulated Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollar could be valued around $50.
  • Graded coins: [GreatCollections has sold] 129 of these coins in the past 15 years, with prices ranging from $59 to $1,974, in grades 58 to 68.
  • High-grade examples: High-grade examples of the Wounded Eagle, especially those certified by reputable grading services like PCGS, can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. One MS68 example sold for $5,160. PCGS has certified fewer than 600 of these coins.
  • Condition: Coins in better condition (higher grades) command higher prices.
  • Certification: Having the coin professionally graded by services like PCGS can authenticate the error and potentially increase its value.
  • Auction Records: The record auction price for an MS68 Wounded Eagle is $7,200, sold in July 2023.
  • Year and Mint Mark: Look for the year 2000 and a “P” mint mark (Philadelphia).
  • Reverse Design: Carefully examine the eagle on the reverse for a raised line or flaw resembling a wound or gash across its belly.

If you believe you have a Wounded Eagle Sacagawea dollar, it’s recommended to consult with a professional numismatist or send it to a reputable grading service for evaluation.

The 2000-D Sacagawea coin is rare primarily because of its production error. This occurred when a Sacagawea dollar was mistakenly struck with the reverse design of a South Carolina quarter. The result is an extremely rare and valuable coin due to the unusual combination of designs.
