It’s easy to check your tire tread depth using a coin! Here’s how to do the “penny test”:

  1. Grab a Penny: Find a standard US penny with Lincoln’s head on it.
  2. Insert the Penny: Place the penny upside down (Lincoln’s head facing the tire) into a tread groove.
  3. Check the Result: See how much of Lincoln’s head is visible.

– If you can see all of Lincoln’s head: Your tread depth is less than 2/32 of an inch , meaning your tires are worn and should be replaced.
– If part of Lincoln’s head is covered: Your tires have more than 2/32 of an inch of tread depth remaining.

  1. Repeat for Accuracy: Check several locations on each tire, as wear can be uneven.

In addition to the penny test, you can also use a quarter:

  1. Insert a Quarter: Place a quarter into a tread groove with Washington’s head facing downward.
  2. Check the Result: If the tread touches Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32 of an inch of tread remaining.

Important notes:

  • 2/32 of an inch is the legally mandated minimum tread depth in most US states.
  • However, for optimal safety and performance, especially in wet conditions, it’s recommended to consider replacing your tires when the tread reaches 4/32 of an inch.
  • Remember, the coin tests are quick estimations. For the most accurate measurement, consider using a tire tread depth gauge or having a professional inspect your tires.

I can help with that. The 20p Test
If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit. If the outer band of the coin is visible, then your tyres may be illegal and unsafe and should be checked immediately by a qualified tyre professional.

CHECK YOUR TIRE TREAD Here’s how to check your tread with a Canadian quarter: Insert a 25-cent coin in one of the grooves with the caribou facing down. If you see the tip of its nose, it means the tread depth is less tahn 6/32”, so the tire probably won’t last all winter, or 10,000 km.

The penny test provides a reliable, quick estimate of tread depth, though it is not as precise as professional measurements. How often should I perform the penny test? It is recommended to check your tire tread using the penny test at least once a month and before long journeys.
