The Netherlands Antilles used a currency called the Netherlands Antillean guilder (Dutch: gulden; Papiamento: florin), abbreviated as ANG . This currency was in use in the Netherlands Antilles until its dissolution in 2010. Following the dissolution, Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius transitioned to using the US Dollar as of January 1, 2011. The islands of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, however, continued to use the Netherlands Antillean guilder. However, they also planned to replace the gulden with a new currency called the Caribbean guilder. This plan experienced several delays but the new Caribbean guilder was eventually introduced on March 31, 2025, with the Netherlands Antillean guilder remaining legal tender until June 30, 2025.

Netherlands Antillean guilder coins were issued in various denominations:

  • Cents: 1, 2 ½, 5, 10, 25, 50 cents.
  • Guilders: 1, 2 ½, 5 guilders.
  • Many of these coins feature the side bust of the Queen of the Netherlands, including Queen Beatrix and King Willem Alexander, on the front design.
  • The reverse side typically displays the National Coat of Arms, featuring a shield, a crown, and the motto “United in Freedom” (Libertate Unanimus).
  • Coins from different periods were composed of various materials:

– Silver was used until 1970.
– Nickel replaced silver in 1970.
– Aluminum was introduced in 1979 for 1 and 2 ½ cent coins.
– Later, nickel-bonded-steel was used for 10 and 25 cents, while aureate-steel was used for 50 cents, 1, 2 ½, and 5 guilder coins.

The One guilder coin was a coin struck in the Kingdom of the Netherlands between 1818 and 2001. It remained in circulation until 2002 when the guilder currency was replaced by the euro.

I can help with that. The Dutch Guilder is the currency of Netherlands Antilles. Our currency rankings show that the most popular Dutch Guilder exchange rate is the ANG to USD rate. The currency code for Guilders (also called Florins) is ANG, and the currency symbol is ƒ.

Great question! The Netherlands Antilles dissolved on October 10, 2010. Curacao and Sint Maarten (the Dutch two-fifths of the island of Saint Martin) became autonomous territories of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius now fall under the direct administration of the Netherlands.
