In several countries, the coin worth 5 cents is known as a nickel.

Specifically:

  • In the United States , the five-cent coin is called a nickel.
  • In Canada , the five-cent coin is also known as a nickel.
  • In Australia , the five-cent coin is also called a nickel.

It is important to note that although commonly called nickels due to the metal content, some 5-cent coins, like certain US and Canadian coins, are primarily composed of copper with some nickel alloyed in, and some have been made of different materials at various points in history.

The 1885 V-Nickel is the coin that is most sought after by dealers as well as collectors. This coin is considered elusive and difficult to obtain. Even with considerable wear and tear, an 1885 V-Nickel may be worth nearly $400.

Thanks for asking. For collectors, the 1964 nickel holds deep numismatic value as the last coin of its kind before the sweeping changes brought about by the 1965 Coinage Act. The coin’s familiar design—the iconic portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and the historic Monticello building on the reverse—adds to its timeless appeal.

Iconic “Alien” die clash variety of the 2016 changeover 5 cent coin. This is the first of this type we’ve handled and they are exceptionally hard to come by. Note the “antennae” coming from the top of the penny on the obverse, the result of a clashed die from the echidna’s front legs on the reverse.

From my experience, With the 1972 5c cataloguing at 1,500 times face value in Uncirculated quality, this valuable 5c coin is definitely worth looking for! There are a couple of low-mintage 5c coins that are much more likely to appear in your change in Uncirculated condition.
