The title of the world’s heaviest coin is currently held by the “1 Tonne Australian Kangaroo” . This massive coin, produced by the Perth Mint in Australia in 2011, weighs in at an incredible 1,012 kilograms (over 2,200 pounds). It’s made from 99.99% pure gold, has a face value of $1 million Australian dollars, and is recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest gold coin.
The Perth Mint created this coin to promote their Australian Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin Series and showcase their minting capabilities. While technically legal tender, its immense size and high intrinsic value, estimated to be around $58 million in 2021 based on gold prices at the time, mean it’s primarily an investment or display piece and not intended for circulation. It is rarely moved from its permanent display at The Perth Mint’s Gold Exhibition.
