A coin graded MS69 (Mint State 69) is considered a near-perfect example of a coin that has never been circulated.

Here’s a breakdown of what that means:

  • Mint State (MS): This signifies that the coin is in the condition it was in when it left the mint, with no signs of wear from being used in transactions.
  • 69 on a 70-point Scale: This refers to the Sheldon Coin Grading Scale, where a 70 is the highest possible grade, indicating a coin in perfect, flawless condition with no visible imperfections, even under magnification.

Therefore, an MS69 coin is almost perfect, but it may have one or two very minor imperfections that prevent it from achieving the top grade of MS70. These imperfections are typically very small and require close inspection, often with magnification, to be seen.

Examples of such imperfections might include a tiny hairline scratch, a minuscule contact mark, or a slight imperfection in the strike. Despite these minor flaws, an MS69 coin is still considered to be of exceptional quality, displaying a sharp strike and full original luster, [according to the American Numismatic Association].

I can help with that. Superb Gem Uncirculated (MS-67, 68, 69): Exceptional coins with only miniscule imperfections, a lot of “eye appeal” and a good strike. Perfect Uncirculated (MS-70): A flawless specimen, even at 5x-8x magnification.

Thanks for asking. What is the difference between MS-69 and MS-70? A grade of MS-70 is the highest score a coin can receive and indicates perfection in regard to blemishes, strikes, and luster. Meanwhile, an MS-69 rating is near-perfect but has identifiable disfiguring, like a hairline scratch.

The American Numismatic Association acknowledges the worth of MS69 coins, making them a popular choice among collectors. These coins offer near-perfect quality at least half the price of higher-graded options, providing an excellent balance between value and affordability.

Mint State 69. MS69. Coin has a sharp strike with full original luster, with no more than two small non-detracting contact marks or flaws. No hairlines or scuff marks are visible. Eye appeal is exceptional.
