A person who collects coins is called a numismatist . While the terms “numismatist” and “coin collector” are often used interchangeably, [according to APMEX] , there are distinctions.

A numismatist is typically someone with a deeper knowledge of coins, encompassing their historical, cultural, and artistic context. They are often involved in studying and researching the production and use of coins to understand their rarity, historical significance, and the societies that produced them. Some numismatists may even specialize in specific eras or types of coinage.

A coin collector , while passionate about collecting coins, may not have the same level of academic or professional focus. They may collect for a variety of reasons, including hobby, investment, sentimental value, or even just for the thrill of the hunt.

In essence, while all numismatists are coin collectors, not all coin collectors are numismatists. Numismatics is a broader field that includes the study of coins and other forms of currency, such as tokens, medals, and paper money. [The U.S. Mint highlights] that numismatics also involves understanding the cultural significance, artistry, and history of currency.

I can help with that. A coin collector is more formally called a ‘ numismatic’ or ‘numismatist’. The word numismatic means the study or collection of currency. This covers tokens, paper money, coins and medals.

Other forms: numismatists. The person who looks closely at every penny might not be cheap — he might be a numismatist, a coin collector, looking for old or rare coins that somehow got into the mix.

Approach: Coin collectors often approach their hobby with a focus on personal enjoyment and the satisfaction of building a collection. Numismatists, however, take a more academic and scholarly approach, seeking to understand and preserve the history and artistry of currency.

Fun Fact! A person who collects coins is called a numismatist (“noo-miz-ma-tist”). Numismatics (“noo-miz-ma-ticks”) is the study and collecting of things that are used as money, including coins, tokens, and paper bills.
