The value of a John Adams dollar coin primarily depends on its condition and any potential errors.

  • Circulated coins: If you find a John Adams dollar coin in your pocket change, it’s generally only worth its face value, which is one dollar.
  • Uncirculated coins: Uncirculated or proof condition coins will sell for a bit over face value. For example, a 2007-P John Adams Presidential Dollar in Uncirculated collectible condition can be purchased for around $6.25. According to the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), the value of a 2007-P John Adams dollar coin in MS63 grade (a nice uncirculated condition) is about $2.50. Higher Mint State (MS) grades can fetch higher prices, with an MS67 graded coin valued at $20 and an MS68 graded coin at $40.

Some John Adams dollar coins were struck with missing edge lettering , due to a minting error. The edge lettering includes the date, mint mark, and mottoes like “In God We Trust” and “E Pluribus Unum”. An estimated 12,000 such error coins were produced, and they are considered collectible.

  • For instance, an MS 64 John Adams Dollar with missing edge lettering (sometimes called a “Godless dollar”) has been sold for over $3,000.
  • Other errors like Double Edge Lettering, where the edge inscriptions are doubled or overlapping, can also make the coin more valuable. A 2007-P John Adams Presidential Dollar with Double Edge Lettering Overlap in MS64 condition is listed for $39.95.
  • Some coins may also exhibit Double Rim Lettering or Inverted Double Rim Lettering errors, which can increase their value.

In conclusion, while a standard John Adams dollar coin is worth its face value of $1, those in pristine uncirculated condition or with identifiable minting errors, especially missing edge lettering, can be quite valuable to collectors.

Thanks for asking. As a way of honoring more presidents, the U.S. Mint began issuing Presidential Dollar coins in the 2000s. Most are worth about face value, but a couple are valued in six figures due to errors.
