A Japanese 10 yen coin (十円硬貨, Jū-en kōka) can be worth its face value (about $0.067 USD as of August 14, 2025), but some specific issues are considered rare and can fetch significantly higher prices among collectors.

Here’s a breakdown of potentially valuable 10 yen coins

  • Early Issues (1951-1958) with Reeded Edges (“Giza 10”): These coins are characterized by their ribbed or “jagged” edges. While not all coins from this period are highly valuable, those in uncirculated condition can command hundreds of dollars. Some sources even claim values potentially exceeding $9,000 for a 1951 coin.
  • 1989 Coins with Specific Temple Design Variations: In the latter half of 1989, slight modifications were made to the depiction of the Byodoin Phoenix Hall on the coin’s obverse. These specific variations are reportedly quite valuable, with one source claiming values exceeding $810,000. However, this claim has been disputed by other sources who find it to be highly inaccurate and potentially misleading.
  • Coins in Uncirculated Condition: Regardless of the year, coins in pristine, uncirculated condition will always be more valuable to collectors than those with wear and tear.

Great question! The first ten yen coins were made from 1871 to 1989 with coins dated 1871, 1876, 1877, 1951, and 1958 using a bronze temple and dragon design. All of these dates in side of those from 1871 to 1989 are now rarely found for sale as they are highly valued.

The 10 yen coin (十円硬貨, Jū-en kōka) is one denomination of the Japanese yen. The obverse of the coin depicts the Phoenix Hall of Byōdō-in, a Buddhist temple in Uji, Kyoto prefecture, with the kanji for “Japan” and “Ten Yen”.
