The value of a half dollar coin can vary greatly depending on several factors, primarily its year of mintage, condition, and any unique characteristics or errors.

  • 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars (90% Silver): These are the most valuable Kennedy Half Dollars due to their silver content. Their value can range from $13.79 (melt value as of August 14, 2025) to potentially thousands of dollars, depending on the condition and any special features like the “Accented Hair” variety (worth up to $46,800) or Doubled Die varieties.
  • 1965-1970 Kennedy Half Dollars (40% Silver): These coins also contain silver but in a lower percentage. Their value can range from $5.64 (melt value as of August 14, 2025) to several hundred dollars for uncirculated or error coins like Doubled Dies.
  • 1971-Present Kennedy Half Dollars (Copper-Nickel Clad): Most half dollars minted after 1970 are composed of copper and nickel and are generally only worth their face value of 50 cents, [according to Reddit] . However, some exceptions exist:

– Uncirculated condition (MS-67 or higher): Can command a premium.
– Errors: Errors like coins struck on the wrong planchet or those with missing designer’s initials can significantly increase the value. For example, a 1971-D transitional error half dollar, struck on a 40% silver planchet, sold for $13,000. A 1971-D with doubled die features can be worth up to $3,750. A 1972-D Missing Designer’s Initials (FS-901) can range from $390 to $950.
– Special Mint Sets (SMS) and Proof Coins: SMS coins (1965-1967) and later proof coins (minted for collectors) can also be more valuable, especially in high grades or with rare features. Some proofs from the 1990s and 2000s can fetch $25-$140 in high condition.

These coins are generally more valuable due to their age and silver content.

  • 90% Silver Half Dollars (Pre-1964): Melt value as of August 14, 2025, is $13.79. However, their numismatic value can be considerably higher, ranging from $10 for circulated examples to thousands of dollars for rare varieties and those in excellent condition.
  • Specific Older Half Dollars: Coins like the Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Capped Bust, Seated Liberty, Barber, Walking Liberty, and Franklin Half Dollars can be worth thousands or even millions of dollars, particularly those in high grades or with rare varieties. For example, a Draped Bust half dollar can be worth up to $2,150,000, and a Seated Liberty half dollar sold for $517,000.
  • Identify the Year and Mint Mark: This is crucial for determining its silver content and potential rarity.
  • Assess the Condition (Grade): Coins in better condition (less wear and tear) are generally more valuable.
  • Look for Errors or Unique Features: Double Dies, repunched mint marks, missing designer’s initials, and accented hair variations can significantly increase value.
  • Consult a Coin Expert or Price Guide: For accurate valuations, especially for potentially rare or valuable coins, it’s best to consult a professional numismatist or utilize online price guides and resources like Greysheet. Be wary of quick appraisals at pawn shops, as they may not offer the true value.
