When talking about a “Republic of Austria coin” (Osterreich), it’s important to note that the official currency of Austria is now the Euro (EUR), [according to Wise] and [Visiting Vienna] . Prior to 2002, the currency was the Austrian Schilling.

Therefore, depending on the context, a “Republic of Austria coin” could refer to:

  • Euro coins: These are the current circulating coins in Austria and are part of the Eurozone currency. Austrian Euro coins have unique designs for each denomination, with different themes for the minor, middle, and major coins, including flowers, architecture from Vienna, and famous Austrians. For example, the 1 cent coin features a gentian, and the 2 cent coin features an edelweiss.
  • Schilling coins: These are historical coins that were in circulation before the Euro was adopted. The schilling was in use from 1925-1938 and from 1945-2002. The Schilling was divided into 100 groschen. The Austrian National Bank (Oesterreichische Nationalbank) still exchanges Schilling banknotes and the last series of coins into Euros indefinitely. Examples of Schilling coins include the 1 Schilling coin, often featuring the denomination and the national coat of arms or Edelweiss flowers.
  • Commemorative or collectible coins: The Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich) regularly issues collector coins with fascinating themes, historical significance, and beautiful designs. These can be made of various metals including silver, gold, copper, and bronze, and may be denominated in Euro or have a face value in Euro.

In summary, when discussing a “Republic of Austria coin,” it’s crucial to specify whether you are referring to current Euro coins or historical Schilling coins to ensure clarity.

I can help with that. The Austrian Mint started issuing these 1 Austrian Schilling coins in 1959. They were withdrawn from circulation in 2002. The Austrian coin of 1 schilling shows the edelweiss flower that growns in the Austrian mountains. The front side of the coin contains the text ‘Republik Österreich’.

Good point! Austria, formally the Republic of Austria, is a landlocked country in Central Europe, lying in the Eastern Alps. It is a federation of nine states, of which the capital Vienna is the most populous city and state.
