The highest possible grade a coin can receive on the widely accepted Sheldon Grading Scale is 70 , representing a Perfect Uncirculated coin. This means the coin is flawless and shows no imperfections, even under magnification.

Here’s a breakdown of the coin grading system and how the highest grade fits in:

  • Sheldon Scale: The grading system goes from 1 to 70.
  • Categories: The scale divides coins into circulated (1-59) and uncirculated (60-70) grades.
  • Mint State (MS): This designation is given to coins that were never circulated and remain in the same condition as when they left the mint. Grades in this category range from MS-60 to MS-70.
  • Proof (PR/PF): Proof coins are specially minted for collectors with a different production process that results in a mirror-like finish and sharp details. They are also graded on the 1-70 scale, but the designation PR or PF is used to differentiate them from circulated coins. PR-70 indicates a perfect proof coin.
  • MS-70 and PR-70: Both represent the pinnacle of their respective categories, denoting a coin in absolutely perfect condition with no wear, handling marks, or contact marks visible even under magnification.

Great question! Extremely Fine, or XF is an adjectival grading term used to describe coins that show some wear from circulation but still exhibit full details and are in above-average condition. The Extremely Fine adjectival grade is between the Very Fine (VF) and About Uncirculated (AU) grades.

Thanks for asking. MS70 coins are business-strike coins for circulation with a matte or satin finish, while PR70 coins are proof coins designed for collectors, featuring a mirror-like finish and frosted relief. Both grades indicate perfect coins without visible imperfections.
