When talking about the “rarest coin in the world,” it’s important to consider both the scarcity of the coin and its historical context and legal status . While many coins are rare, some are more coveted and, therefore, more valuable than others.

One strong contender for the title of “rarest coin in the world” is the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle.

  • Limited Survival: Although a significant number (over 400,000) of these $20 gold coins were minted, almost all were melted down due to President Roosevelt’s executive order to abandon the gold standard during the Great Depression. Only a handful escaped the melting pot.
  • Legal Status: Most 1933 Double Eagles are considered government property and are illegal to own. This makes the single privately-owned coin exceptionally unique and valuable.
  • High Value: The only privately-owned 1933 Double Eagle has fetched record-breaking prices at auction, selling for $18.9 million in 2021.
  • 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar: This was one of the first silver dollars minted by the U.S. government, with only around 120-130 believed to exist today.
  • 1804 Silver Dollar: These coins were not actually minted in 1804 but later as diplomatic gifts. Only 15 are known, and they’re highly valued by collectors.
  • 1787 Brasher Doubloon: Privately minted by goldsmith Ephraim Brasher, these early American gold coins are incredibly scarce, especially those with the “EB” hallmark on the eagle’s breast.
  • 1913 Liberty Head V Nickel: Only five of these unauthorized nickels were ever minted, making them legendary among collectors.

The rarity of a coin isn’t always the sole factor in its value, [notes Nasdaq] . Historical significance and the condition of the coin also play a crucial role.
